In your child's Spanish special during the week of February 13-17 they used the website Duolingo to help them learn and practice Spanish. Duolingo is the world's largest online language learning platform. It turns language learning into a game to make it more fun and effective. Students can learn languages for free while earning points for correct answers, racing against the clock, and leveling up.
I am challenging students in grades 3, 4, and 5, as well as staff members, to a 6 Week Duolingo Challenge! Starting February 20 and going until March 31, I challenge students to practice their Spanish on Duolingo each day! I will give a prize to the TOP 3 students who have the most XP (what you get after completing a lesson) in EACH class after the challenge is done. This is a great way to encourage students to practice their Spanish speaking skills!
I will give students opportunities to use Duolingo in the classroom, but students should keep up with their Spanish lessons at home. They can download the Duolingo app for phones or tablets or access their account on the Duolingo website (www.duolingo.com).
Also, students should have headphones when doing Duolingo language exercise. IF YOU CHILD DOES NOT ALREADY HAVE HEADPHONES AT SCHOOL, PLEASE SEND THEM IN ASAP!
Thank you very much!If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at email@example.com.
Thanks! Happy Duolingo-ing :)
It has been too long since I posted an update on what we are doing in class! Apparently having a baby in the house takes up a lot of time! :)
All of the grades just finished up a unit on los numeros. 4th and 5th grades learned their numbers up to 100 (and beyond) while 3rd grade focused on numbers up to 40. We played many games to help us practice our numbers. To finish the unit students took a short quiz in class. Quizzes will be returned home next week.
In the upcoming week students will create an account with the website Duolingo. This is a fantastic platform for helping people of all ages learn any language they desire! I have used it myself to study Portuguese and it is extremely user friendly and teaches the language in a fun and engaging way. Students will be able to go go through the lessons and practice their Spanish at home and in the classroom. I know they will enjoy this!
5th grade: Sports and Famous Hispanic Athletes
4th grade: Describing where I live (North Carolina products, Landforms, Action words)
3rd grade: Parts of the body and adjectives
¡Hola a todos! We are off to a great 2016-2017 school year in Spanish room 114! We have been busy learning new vocabulary and reviewing previous topics as well! Here are some highlights of the last few weeks!
Third grade: Since it is their first year of Spanish, we have been learning los dias de la semana (days of the week) with the Addams Family theme song and los meses del año (the months of the year) with the Macarena song. Ask your child to teach them to you! We are able to describe the weather and will practice saying weather phrases as news reporters and weatherman. Stay tuned!
Fourth/Fifth grade: We have been reviewing weather phrases and describing the weather each day. We are also reviewing los saludos (greetings) and how to answer simple questions in Spanish, like ¿Como te llamas? ¿Cuantos años tienes? ¿De donde eres?. Students will create a texting dialogue between two people using these phrases.
All of the videos we use in class are on my website. To find them, go to the STUDENTS tab on the homepage. On that page click on SONGS-VIDEOS and scroll to find your favorite video!

¡Hola a todos! Hello everyone!
I hope you had a wonderful holiday break. I spent two weeks in Ecuador with my husband and his family and had a wonderful time!
Next week all of the classes will have a short quiz to wrap up the units we have been learning. Students have been given a study guide to use to help them review for the quiz. Because the topics we studied are basic topics, there are many online resources/games-songs to help them.
Below is useful vocabulary from the units:
Hace buen tiempo = It's good weather.
Hace mal tiempo = It's bad weather.
Hace calor = It's hot.
Hace frio = It's cold.
Hace sol = It's sunny.
Llueve = It's rainy.
El cielo está azul = The sky is blue.
El cielo está nublado = The sky is cloudy.

Practice counting to 30 with this video and to 50+ with this video.
